Green Card Lottery
GUIDANCE FOR INDIVIDUALS APPLYING THROUGH THE GREEN CARD LOTTERY
The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is designed to increase immigration from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. Each year, the U.S. Department of State selects applicants at random through a computerized lottery system.
Winning the lottery does not guarantee a green card. Only about half of those selected ultimately qualify for permanent residency. Applicants must still meet strict eligibility requirements and complete the green card process successfully.
Overview of the Process
1. Submit Lottery Entry
During the annual registration period, eligible applicants submit an online entry through the official U.S. Department of State website. There is no fee to enter the lottery.
2. Selection by Random Drawing
The Department of State conducts a computerized drawing and selects applicants randomly. Selected individuals receive a notification of selection and instructions to proceed with the immigrant visa application.
3. Apply for Permanent Residency
Selected applicants must prove eligibility and complete the green card process, including an in-person interview:
- Inside the U.S.: Apply for adjustment of status through USCIS.
- Outside the U.S.: Complete consular processing at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
4. Final Approval
Applicants who meet all eligibility criteria and successfully complete the process may be granted lawful permanent residency in the United States.
